The world of dance will always hold a special place in my heart. When it comes to dance, I love doing it, teaching it, creating it and photographing it.
Ashley approached me to help complete her college and university applications with some creative photography. We knew that we wanted to play with draped fabric. I contacted the woman who taught me aerial silk classes, and she was gracious enough to let me borrow “Pinky” and “Bodysuit Man” (any Seinfeld fans should totally get that reference) for the shoot. I love it when two worlds collide for the benefit of others! Thanks Talia!

The shoot was just as fun as I knew it would be, and I was in my happy place. It is great to simply play. (Huge thank you to Lindsay Nelko for playing with us. Check out the link to her beautiful website, featuring my photography!) These are our favourites out of hundreds of photographs. I decided to show a good handful of shots, because the fabric really is a second subject in the photograph. In essence these photographs are a pas de deux. Both Ashley and the fabric bring a life of their own to the images.

Dance and photography provide important life lessons. You need to spend many hours practising the craft, and you certainly don’t become an expert overnight. If you are patient and keep at it, you will notice that certain things become second nature and you will see improvement. Enjoy the process and be comfortable with failure. Failure, and the fear of it, can inspire growth - if you choose.

Ashley, I’m so proud of your accomplishments and I hope that you get into the school of your dreams. If Dance Spirit Magazine likes you, I have a good feeling that a lot of other people will too.
